Orthodontic emergencies are uncommon, but they can happen. If you or your child experiences an issue during treatment, knowing how to handle it can help prevent discomfort and protect your progress. Our team at Marshall Orthodontics is here to guide you through every step, even during unexpected moments.
Types of Orthodontic Emergencies
Most orthodontic emergencies fall into two categories:
Appliance-Related Issues
Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth
Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances
Sometimes brackets, wires, or bands can become bent, broken, or loose during treatment. If this happens, please call our office during patient hours to schedule an appointment. For the comfort and safety of all patients, we are not able to accommodate walk-in emergency visits.
In the meantime, here are a few quick fixes to try at home:
Irritating Tie Wire: If a tie wire is poking or irritating your mouth, cover it with orthodontic wax or gently tuck it under the archwire using a Q-tip or pencil eraser.
Loose Band or Bracket: A loose bracket or band can usually stay in place until your scheduled appointment. Contact us during office hours so we can determine if it needs to be reattached.
Broken or Poking Wire: If a wire is sticking out or has broken, try bending it gently back into place with a clean pencil eraser. You can also clip it carefully with clean nail clippers. If the issue persists, give us a call.

Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth
If you or your child experiences a blow to the mouth, whether in orthodontic treatment or not—take the following steps:
Apply ice right away to minimize swelling.
Contact your general dentist as soon as possible.
Your dentist may take X-rays to determine if any teeth were fractured, displaced, or knocked out.
If any appliances are damaged during the injury, we’ll work with you to repair or replace them after your general dentist has addressed the injury, depending on your comfort and needs.
After-Hours Orthodontic Emergencies
If an urgent situation occurs outside of office hours and causes significant discomfort or pain:
Call our office and follow the instructions provided.
You’ll be directed to an on-call team member or given next steps for emergency care.
